Computers

Hi, my name is Nathan Torkington and I have a problem. I get too much e-mail to respond to in the course of a day without displacing some other part of my life. I check Dilbert every day. I am very anal about putting the trailing slash on URLs. I have carpal tunnel syndrome. I rarely leave home without my notebook. I have made HTML for a living. Yes, I am a computer geek.

But what do I do? I geek on the web a lot, both writing HTML and making CGI scripts to access databases or do other whizzy things. I started the comp.infosystems.www FAQ which my friend Tom Boutell now maintains. I write a lot of PERL, can do basic system administration tasks, and learned about firewalling in the course of my stint with NetLink in New Zealand.

My hardware of choice is a good solid Unix box (SGI, DEC Alpha, even a PC running FreeBSD) and a colour NCD X terminal (when I was in New Zealand, I had an MCX which had audio support). I make do in these hard-up times with a colour 486/100 notebook (audio built in).
